Sunset Spots

Mykonos faces west along its main inhabited coast, which means the island has good structural conditions for sunsets. The problem is that everyone knows this. By 19:00 in summer, every seat in Little Venice and every bar with a western view is occupied. The best sunset experiences on the island are found either by arriving very early or by choosing viewpoints that the crowds haven’t fully discovered.

The Windmills at Kato Myli

The row of six windmills on the promontory above Little Venice is the most recognizable skyline element on the island. They face west and sit high enough above the town to offer an unobstructed sea view. The small path around the windmill base is less crowded than the bars below — arriving on foot from the Chora side rather than from Little Venice puts you above the main crowd. The windmills themselves date from the 16th century, built by the Venetians to mill grain; several have been restored and one is occasionally open for visits.

The Headland Above Kapari

The walk from Agios Ioannis to the headland above Kapari cove takes 5 minutes from the beach. The view from the top faces west-southwest across the strait directly toward Delos, with no buildings in the foreground. In summer, you will typically share this spot with fewer than ten people. The sunset here, with the ruins of Delos catching the last light across the water, is one of the most genuinely affecting sights in the Aegean.

The Kastro Neighborhood, Chora

The Kastro (castle) quarter at the northern edge of Chora is the oldest part of town, built on the highest ground above the original harbor. Several of the narrow streets that face west have open sea views framed by white walls and blue-domed churches. The area is quieter than Little Venice and gives a different — more architectural — frame for the same sunset.

Practical Tips

  • For Little Venice: if you want a table, arrive by 18:00 in summer and order before you settle. Bars that face the water fill completely by 19:00.
  • The windmill path above Little Venice is free and uncrowded as late as 19:30 — simply less known than the bar scene below.
  • The light is best between 30 minutes before and 15 minutes after the actual sunset. Check the time for your date before planning.
  • In September and October, sunsets shift south and slightly earlier — the light quality is often better than in July and August.
