Seaside Dining

Mykonos has a lot of tables next to water. Not all of them have food worth sitting down for. The places in this section combine a genuine sea position with cooking that’s at least as good as the view — either because the kitchen takes its ingredients seriously or because the setting is exceptional enough to warrant a special meal. The former is rarer than the latter, but both exist.

The Old Harbor Waterfront, Chora

The tavernas along the old harbor in Chora — particularly the stretch between Alefkandra and the fishing harbor — offer water-facing tables in the most architecturally significant setting on the island. The Little Venice buildings are immediately visible. The setting is genuinely beautiful.

Food quality varies. The better tavernas in this area focus on fresh fish and standard Greek mezedes, and the menus tend to be simpler than the pretentious restaurant streets. Arrive at 21:00 for dinner; earlier tables are fine but the atmosphere builds later.

Ornos and the South Coast

The seafront at Ornos has a row of established tavernas with direct water views that serve reliably good traditional food. These have been operating for long enough that they’ve self-selected for quality — places that don’t cook well in this visible position don’t survive long enough to develop regulars. The fish here is fresh, the service is efficient, and the setting is clean and direct. It lacks the drama of Chora but makes up for it in consistency.

Beach Tavernas at Kalo Livadi and Agios Sostis

The best eating-at-the-water experiences on the island are arguably at Kiki’s Taverna (Agios Sostis) and the tavernas at the eastern end of Kalo Livadi — not because the setting is the most glamorous, but because these are the places where you eat genuinely fresh food outdoors with the sea within reach and minimal constructed atmosphere. The contrast with the staged seaside dining on the main tourist circuit is significant.

Practical Tips

  • At any seaside restaurant, ask whether the fish was caught today. A good kitchen will tell you clearly. An answer of ‘yes, of course’ without specifics means probably not.
  • Tables directly facing the water fill first and often require a reservation. The second row is fine and usually easier to book.
  • Dinner with wine at a proper seaside restaurant in Chora will cost €60–100 per person. Budget for it as a special meal rather than a daily habit.
