Fokos and Mersini: go for the coast, not the promise of emptiness
Fokos and nearby Mersini sit beyond the main southern beach circuit on the north-east side of Mykonos. They suit self-sufficient visitors on calm days, but road, parking, wind and services require current checking. Their remote character is relative, not guaranteed.
The route is part of the experience
The journey from Ano Mera moves away from the dense western and southern visitor circuit and through a more open rural landscape. That change in approach is one reason the beaches feel different. The page should map the final road honestly, including surface, width, gradients and legal parking after a current drive.
Do not convert “unpaved” into “4×4 required” or “easy for all cars” without inspection and rental-policy review. Conditions can change with grading, traffic and weather.
Fokos
Fokos is the larger and more open of the pair, with a broad coastal setting that can absorb more visitors than a small cove. It is exposed to northerly conditions, so light-wind days are the natural target for swimming. On rough days it may still be worth seeing from a safe position, but the trip should not be framed as a guaranteed beach day.
Any taverna or service information must be displayed as a current seasonal listing. The presence of one business can improve convenience without turning the beach into a fully serviced destination.
Mersini / Myrsini
Mersini is smaller and enclosed by lower headlands. The cove’s intimacy is an advantage until a modest number of visitors makes it feel full. The access and exact relationship to parking are more important than generic adjectives such as secluded.
Use both Mersini and Myrsini in metadata and body copy once, then standardize the preferred spelling throughout the site.
Which one should you choose?
- Choose Fokos for more shoreline, a broader landscape and a day that may include a meal when current service is open.
- Choose Mersini for a smaller-scale cove when you arrive early and the wind is light.
- Visit both only if parking and road conditions make the short transfer reasonable; do not create traffic by repeatedly moving vehicles.
- Skip both as swimming plans when waves, gusts or visibility make the water uncomfortable.
- For young children, mobility limitations or visitors needing toilets and shade, a serviced sheltered beach may be the better choice.
Self-sufficiency and etiquette
Bring everything needed and remove everything brought. Do not leave food waste because it is organic, and do not stack stones or alter the beach for photographs. Keep music private and low; the absence of a beach club should not be replaced by portable speakers.
Park with emergency and resident access in mind. A line of badly positioned rental cars can damage the very sense of space the guide is promoting.
Combine with Ano Mera
Fokos and Mersini make most sense after or before Ano Mera, Panagia Tourliani and an inland meal. This creates a full north-east route with cultural context and a weather-dependent coast, rather than a long drive for one beach pin.
When the wind is unsuitable, keep Ano Mera and the rural route, then redirect to a sheltered southern bay. The itinerary remains worthwhile even when the coast changes.
Practical information
This beach does not currently appear on KTEL Mykonos’s published list of scheduled destinations (which covers Ornos, Platis Gialos, Paraga, Paradise, Super Paradise, Agios Ioannis, Kalo Livadi, Kalafatis, Panormos, Elia and Agios Stefanos). Plan on a taxi, private transfer or rental for this stretch of coast, and confirm current road and parking conditions locally before relying on them.
