Kapari Beach

Kapari doesn’t appear on most maps and has no signage pointing to it. It’s a small rocky cove on the western coast, a 10–15 minute walk from the road near Agios Ioannis, with no facilities and no organized anything. What it has is clear, calm water protected by a natural headland, a rocky shelf good for snorkeling, and an unobstructed view across the strait to Delos. On a clear morning, you can see the ruins of the Terrace of the Lions from the water.

The Walk and the Cove

From the road above Agios Ioannis beach, a well-worn path descends west along the headland. The walk takes 10 to 15 minutes and requires reasonable footwear — not a hike, but not flip-flop terrain. The path is fully sun-exposed; in July and August, do it before 10am or after 17:00.

The cove fits 20 to 30 people at most. The beach is a mix of small stones and coarse sand. The southwestern corner, tucked against the cliff face, offers the best snorkeling — sea urchins, small fish, and good visibility down to 4–5 meters.

The View Across to Delos

Delos is 2.5 kilometers from the western coast of Mykonos — close enough that, on a clear day, you can make out structural details of the ruins from the water. The strait between the two islands is a protected marine area, contributing to water quality on this coast. The view is best in the morning, when the light comes from the east and the ruins are in direct sun. By afternoon, Delos is backlit and the detail is lost.

Practicalities

There are no facilities at Kapari — no water, no food, no shade structures, no toilets. Agios Ioannis beach, a short walk back up the path, has a small bar and taverna. Parking is available at Agios Ioannis, free and generally easy to find outside peak weekends.

Practical Tips

  • Go early. Before 9:30am the cove is often completely empty.
  • Bring reef shoes — the entry point is rocky and the shelf near the cliff can be sharp.
  • Not suitable for young children — rocky entry, no lifeguards.
  • The sunset from the headland above Kapari, looking west toward Delos, is one of the quieter alternatives to the crowded viewpoints in Chora.

Why It Stands Out

Kapari requires a little effort and returns something increasingly rare on Mykonos: genuine solitude in a place of real natural beauty, within walking distance of an ancient UNESCO site visible from the water. That combination is hard to find anywhere in the Aegean.
