Agios Ioannis

Agios Ioannis is a small coastal settlement on the southwestern tip of Mykonos, looking directly across the strait toward Delos. The bay is calm, the beach is pleasant, and the area has maintained a quieter character than most of the western and southern coast. It’s also where the 1999 film Shirley Valentine was partially filmed, which has given it a residual presence in travel writing that its actual scale doesn’t quite justify — but the bay itself is genuinely beautiful, particularly in the evening when the light hits Delos from the east.

The Bay and Beach

The beach at Agios Ioannis is small — perhaps 100 meters long — and has a mixture of organized sunbeds and free space. The water is calm, clear, and warm, benefiting from the bay’s westward orientation and the protection of the headlands. The sea floor is sandy with some pebbles near the far ends.

From the water, looking west, Delos is visible approximately 2.5 kilometers away. In the right light — late afternoon, when the ruins catch the low sun — the scene is one of the most quietly remarkable in the Aegean: swimming in a bay that has been inhabited since antiquity, looking toward an island that was once the most sacred in the Greek world.

Food and the Area

There are two or three small tavernas and a beach bar in Agios Ioannis. The food quality is adequate rather than exceptional, but the setting compensates. Eating at the water’s edge in the evening, with Delos across the strait and the sun dropping behind the hills, is one of those combinations that works regardless of whether the food is remarkable.

The small chapel of Agios Ioannis, perched on the headland above the bay, is accessible by a short path and worth climbing for the view back toward Chora and south toward the sea.

Practical Tips

  • The walk from Agios Ioannis to the Kapari cove takes 10–15 minutes — a worthwhile combination if you have a full afternoon.
  • Sunset here is best in June and July, when the sun drops directly behind the low hills of Delos. In August, the angle shifts slightly and the effect is less pronounced.
  • The road from Chora takes about 10 minutes by car. No public bus service to Agios Ioannis.
  • This is not a beach for people who want facilities and activity. It is a beach for people who want to be somewhere genuinely calm.

Why It Stands Out

Agios Ioannis has the rarest quality on Mykonos in summer: a sense of space and quiet that feels earned rather than manufactured. The Delos view makes it unique among the island’s bays. For those staying in or near Chora, it is one of the best evening options on the island — close enough for a spontaneous decision, different enough from town to feel like a genuine departure.
